Interested in a Big Dog Romp on Saturdays? Let Us Know!
Fit-N-Trim is considering offering a "big" dog romp on Saturdays from 2 to 3 PM. To participate, dogs must be at least six months old, friendly with both people and other dogs, and accustomed to playing with other dogs in groups. Dogs will be enrolled on a trial basis initially to ensure that they can handle group play. Please email Karen at kunabug@comcast.net if you are interested in a Saturday romp and include your contact information and your dog's breed, age, and approximate size. If Saturday is not a good time, let us know whether you would be interested in a Sunday or weekday romp.
Pre-Agility Introduction - Thursday, December 11th: 6 to 7 PM
Fit-N-Trim will offer an introduction to agility workshop at its covered agility ring at 103 Haverhill Street (Rte 133) in Rowley, MA. Come learn what to look for to decide if your dog is ready for an agility class and get some tips on what to work on. If your dog is not quite ready, learn about other opportunities that might be the best next step for you and your dog. Pre-registration required. $20
Canine Good Citizen Test
Fit-N-Trim will offer the Canine Good Citizen Test on December 16th starting at 6PM. For a complete description of the test requirements, check out the AKC website at http://www.akc.org/events/cgc/training_testing.cfm. Therapy/Canine Good Citizen Workshop
This is a four hour workshop (2 sessions: December 4th and 11th from 6 to 8PM);for those who want to learn what working together as a therapy dog/handler team entails. Because the skills needed for the Canine Good Citizen(CGC)test are essential to being successful as a therapy team, the workshop will also offer the opportunity to practice those skills and take the CGC test. Topics to be covered include:

Session One: Do’s and don’ts of bringing your dog to a nursing home or hospital facility; familiarizing you and your dog with some of the equipment you will encounter; discussion of the requirements and opportunity to practice the obedience skills for the CGC test

Session Two: Reinforcement of CGC skills you practiced during the week; additional work with hospital and nursing home equipment followed by the CGC test. Those who pass will receive CGC tags; recommendations for further training will be provided to those who need to retake the test.
Workshops will be held at Fit-N-Trim's indoor facility at 108 Newburyport Turnpike (Rte 1) in Rowley, MA. The fee for the two night workshop with CGC test and tag is $100.
Canine and Feline Nutrition: Back to Basics
Saturday, December 6th at 3PM
Dawn Price, RD, of The Natural Dog in Newburyport will offer a one and a half hour workshop on nutrition at Fit-N-Trim's indoor facility on Monday, November 3rd at 6PM. Come and bring your questions about what to feed your dog or cat to ensure that its good health. Cost: $45
Games at 11AM
Saturday, February 14th and Sundays, January 11th and March 15th
Games are held at our indoor agility ring at 103 Haverhill Street (Rte 133), Rowley. Look for the yellow agility sign. Come 15 minutes early if you are new to games and would like an overview of the rules. Check back often for new dates and times. All levels above Beginner 1 are welcome. Drop in fee: Fit-N-Trim students $10.00 (1 dog); guests $15.00 (1 dog).
Canine Massage Workshops
Friday, Jan. 9th at 6PM; Sunday, Jan.18th at 1PM; Saturday, Feb. 21st at 4PM
If you have always wanted to learn how to massage your dog and didn't get a chance to attend our last, very successful workshop (see Massage tab for pictures), plan to attend one of Fit-N-Trim's workshops. Tracy Powers, a Certified Canine Massage Therapist, will demonstrate massage techniques you can use with your dog. Dress comfortably and bring a mat for your dog. This will be a hands-on opportunity. Fee: $45
In 2006, inspired by her 12 year old Aussie, Tracy sold her successful Montessori schools to pursue her passion for animals. She became a Cetified Canine Massage Therapist, through the Palmer Institute of Massage Therapy, in Salem, MA, was "re-certified" as a Reiki I and II Practitioner, studied flower essences and natural healing, and completed several health and behavior classes at North Shore Community College and All Dogs Academy. She is also certified in Animal First Aid and CPR.
Tracy currently is a Sales Consultant and Canine Massage Therapist at the Natural Dog, a health food store and wellness center for pets in Newburyport. She also volunteers as Fundraising Coordinator for Paws New England, a non-profit Canine Rescue Group. In addition, Tracy is the co-owner of Walk with Me! Pet Sitters, and is the proud companion to several rescued animals, including two dogs, Coco and Jake; two cats, Salem and Lucky; and a crazy Cockatoo, Diego. She continues to work with children as a Certified Children's Yoga Instructor and shares her love of animals and dedication to humane education with her all of her young students.
Mighty Minis - An Agility Class Especially for Small Dogs
Does your small dog have lots of energy? Are you or is your dog intimidated by large dogs? Is it too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer for outdoor classes? Then Mighty Minis Agility is for you! Mighty Minis is an agility class just for small and toy dogs. Some of the agility equipment used is smaller than normal. Agility is a wonderful way to build confidence in your small dog while getting it out for exercise in a safe environment. This class is an introduction to agility and includes some basic manners exercises. The focus is on fun and exercise. A new six week session starts on Wednesday, October 29th at 7PM at 108 Newburyport Turnpike.
Mighty Minis Romps
Every Saturday in November at 1PM
Does your small dog have lots of energy? Are you or is your dog intimidated by large dogs? Is it too cold in the winter and too hot in the summer to exercise your dog properly? Then Mighty Minis Romps are for you! Mighty Minis Romps is just for dogs 25 pounds or less.
Romps are held at Fit-N-Trim's indoor facility at 108 Newburyport Turnpike. Drop-in Fee $15
Other Class Starts
Fit-N-Trim has new class sessions beginning every month. In addition to our ongoing classes, Puppy Kindergarten, Good Manners, Agility, and Rally-O, we offer Canine Good Citizenship/Therapy Dog Prep, Heel and Stay Drop-in Sessions, Tricks, Breed Handling (for the conformation ring), and Fly-ball. Class sessions starting in May and June include:
- Puppy Kindergarten (for puppies two to five months old) - Six week sessions start on Tuesday, January 6th at 7PM, Thursday, January 8th at 6PM, Saturday, January 17th at 9AM, Tuesday, February 24th at 7PM, Thursday, February 26th at 6PM and Saturday, March 7th at 9AM. (Note that the first class is without dogs.)
- Basic Manners (for dogs six months old or older) - Six week sessions start on Thursday, January 8th at 7PM and Saturday, January 17th at 10:15AM.
- Intermediate Manners - Six week session starts on Saturday, November 15th at 11:30AM. Fit-N-Trim also holds a drop-in class on Tuesdays at 6PM ($15 per session) for those who cannot commit to a full six week session
- Agility 1- Six week sessions start on Wednesday, January 7th at 11AM and Thursday, January 8th at 6PM at 103 Haverhill Street in Rowley, MA.
- Flyball 101 - Six week session starts on Monday, November 10th at 7:15PM at 108 Newburyport Turnpike..
- Freestyle Dance - Starts again in the fall; check back for the date and time.
- Beginner Obility (for dogs six months old or older) - Six week session starts on Wednesday, October 29th at 6PM.
- Introduction to Breed Handling for the Conformation Ring (4 sessions) on Tuesday at 8PM. Class is limited to 6 handler/dog teams. Class date will be announced when class fills; email Karen at kunabug@comcast.net to sign up.
Severe Weather Cancellations
From time to time it is necessary to cancel classes due to severe weather. To check for cancelations, please call 978-948-2745 for a recorded announcement. Call after 7AM for AM classes or after 3PM for evening classes.
